J R Sutherland Portrait

My academic credentials include both an MA (Hons) (2010) and an MSc by Research (2012) in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh. I have undertaken over 120 hours of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) courses. All of which allow me to provide an element of education to my editorial work by adding explanatory comments and notes alongside recommended changes.

My professional experience includes six years as Assistant Editor, and 5 years as Production Editor, at the University of Edinburgh Journal. Here I am involved in all stages of publication, including the recruitment of new authors, copy editing and advising authors on their submissions - both serious and creative, the design and typesetting of the Journal, and liaison with the production chain.

Aside from my editorial work, I have spent ten years working as an Illustrator for Aberdeen-based DS Design Studio Ltd. Here I have worked on a range of different projects, including patent drawings, logo design and creation, and technical illustrations. Working at the studio has given me a solid foundation in digital artwork, and allows me to bring an additional component to my editorial services: I can advise authors on the design of technical figures and complex illustrations, thereby bringing clarity to both your writing and illustrations.
